Swept away with science!

If you're like me, you've noticed quite a few odd pictures that people have posted on Facebook/Twitter recently with brooms standing up on their own! Out of sheer curiosity, I decided to try it too and see if mine would balance on its own without tipping over: It did! So neat!

My pups were wondering what on earth was up with the boom! It looks like Ranger's nose is holding it in place. :)

Some people think that the broom standing upright is due to gravitational pull of the planets/equinox and how things are aligned. This link dispels that myth! To summarize, the link says that the broom really stands on its own because the center of gravity is directly above the edges of the broom that it balances on. The broom bristles act as a base by fanning out on the floor to provide stability to support the base and handle. Either way, it's still a pretty neat sight to see!
